The Cinema Museum Kennington was full on Wednesday evening for a benefit viewing of the documentary film Tomorrow’s Freedom. The event raised £985.00 in support of the Aida Youth Centre.
For those who missed the event, the film can be viewed here on Channel 4 tv. The film tells the story of Marwan Barghouthi – named the only Palestinian who could provide political unity in Palestine. Tragically he is a political prisoner, spending years in solitary confinement, leading a hunger strike and unable to see family. We were joined by Georgia Scott, who with her sister Sophie, produced the film and founded Ground Truth Productions
Georgia related the difficulty of filming over five years and being unable to meet Marwan in person, relying on interviews with those who know him:his wife Fadwa, the rock behind the campaign for his release, family members, lawyers, politicians from Palestine, Israel and Europe, who all portray a man of vision, integrity and steadfastness, offering hope to many.
We chose this film to highlight the increased number of detentions and imprisonments of men and young boys in the West Bank. Last November, Anas abu Sur, Director of the Aida Youth Centre was detained and imprisoned without trial for 8 months. Thankfully he was released in August. However, around 100 men and boys from the Aida Refugee Camp have also been imprisoned.
On 5 November Tomorrow’s Freedom film will be screened in the House of Commons. We ask you to contact your own MP to urge them to see the film and join the discussion on these detentions.
